the stair incident.

The other day, there was an incident involving our stairs. The main characters of this drama were myself, Randy, and Harper.

Here are the details:

I thought Randy was watching Harper. Randy thought I was watching Harper. Neither of us were watching Harper.

I heard Harper making noises as if she wanted attention. I went to our bedroom - where Randy was and I assumed where Harper was - to see what she wanted. She wasn't there. I then turned my head to the left to the staircase, fearful of what I might find.

And there she was. At the TOP of our staircase (which is a pretty steep staircase with 20 steps). She was just standing there. It appeared that she had crawled to the top and gotten scared. She couldn't figure out how to get down and was stuck.

I didn't want to alarm her or have her try to come to me, so I carefully walked up the stairs and picked her up. I was so scared and happy at the same time. I was so "proud" of her for being cautious and not trying to go down the stairs. I was mad at myself for letting it happen. I was scared for what might have happened.

Just thinking about it almost makes me cry.

Randy and I immediately decided we had to figure out a way to install a baby gate to block the staircase. That area is tricky and there isn't a baby gate that will fit where it really needs to go. But Randy called our "handyman Jim" and we figured out a way to make our baby gate work. We had to get some extra parts and do a little adjusting, but I am relieved to say that it is now secured and Harper should be safe.

There better not be another stair incident like that one. We were lucky it ended like it did. It could have been much worse.

  1. When my baby Brother was maybe a year old or so...maybe younger, I was supposed to be watching him. I thought I was, until I heard a terrible crash down our basement stairs. I was sitting right next to them, but he just moved so quickly and he went down those stairs in his walker. Thank God he landed upright.

Stairs are scary things when you have a baby. I'm so glad it all ended safely :)

  2. What a doll she is....up on her little toes!

Yes, I was terrified of stairs with Ethan. Even now...just the other day, he wanted to jump from step to step. My heart plummets. I know the feeling of wanting to take immediate, quick action and having to make yourself slow down so you don't startle them and cause them to lose balance. It's scary! So glad things turned out okay and that you guys were able to get a gate in place!
